DRUG DELIVERY TO HEAL THE LUNGS
Prof. Josué Sznitman of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and his team are developing a new technology to increase the healing power of existing drugs for treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The method could help save the lives of severe COVID-19 patients.
The patent-pending technology, known as LIFT (Liquid Foam Therapy), is a new method for pulmonary drug delivery with the potential of delivering therapeutics homogeneously and in large doses into the lungs. This is accomplished by loading the drug into the foam, or alternatively foaming the drug directly when possible. In both cases, and unlike liquids, the foam defies gravity and prevents the formation of pools.
